RICK'S BODY WAS gathered up, placed carefully in thick black plastic bags and carried away in the back of the ambulance while the police took photographs of the remains of the feeding frenzy. They then extensively questioned anyone that had interacted with Rick the previous day. When had they seen him last? Had he been drinking? Was he acting strangely?

'Is this all necessary?' Dave asked the two uniformed officers who'd set up a makeshift interview room in the inn's saloon bar. He was keen to get back out there and find out what had happened to Rick. 'It was obviously an animal attack.'

The taller officer straightened his tunic. 'That's what it looks like, but seeing as the largest animal anyone's seen in that forest is a slightly irritable badger the locals named Angry Keith, we need to establish a timeline of Mr Cartwright's movements for the coroner's report.'

'We may be dealing with an escaped dangerous animal,' continued the shorter officer, who'd never seen a dead body in the line of duty until today. He was already thinking how the way that he had handled this case would be great evidence for his next appraisal, so long as nobody mentioned the vomiting.

It was late by the time the questioning had finished and Martin insisted that the Paranormal Investigation Group had a drink on the house before they made their way back home. Dave watched them from the other side of the bar; a solemn mourning party for the late Richard Cartwright.

'Perhaps we should go too,' Melanie said. 'The police have our details if they need to get in touch.'

'Hmmm,' he replied, the noise non-committal. Dave didn't know where Death was, or what he was up to. He'd texted both him and Anne, but there'd been no reply. All he knew was that Rick was out there, alone and confused. He was so close to the living, calling out to them, the words disappearing into the void between. Dave understood that loneliness; the knowledge that life had so callously thrown him aside. He couldn't sit here in the warmth of the bar while Rick was abandoned in the cold he could no longer feel. Also, he'd been promised a free steak.

'He should never have been out there,' one of the regulars slurred. He'd propped himself up on the bar since they'd found Rick's body. His weather-worn face was ruddy with drink and he'd reached the stage of inebriation where it was important that everybody knew his opinions and agreed that they were correct. 'This is what happens when you invite strangers in.'

'Now, Jack,' Martin said. 'There's no need for talk like that.'

Jack pushed his flat cap back and waved a gnarled finger under Martin's nose. 'I told you this would come and bite you in the arse.' He turned to face the room. 'It'll come and bite you all in the arse.'

In the corner, Lila sobbed quietly. Martin walked around to the other side of the bar and took Jack by the arm.
